New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi has lauded the National Clinical Management Protocol based on Ayurveda on Yoga, calling it “commendable”.

Amid rising COVID-19 cases, Ayurveda and Yoga are being tried for immunity purposes.

The National Clinical Management Protocol based was released jointly by Health Minister Harsh Vardhan and Ayush Ministry Shripad Naik on Tuesday, virtually.

Earlier, Harsh Vardhan said that experts and other national research organisations have prepared the Protocol for management of Covid-19 as per the Report & Recommendations of the Interdisciplinary Committee which will further strengthen our fight against Covid-19.

Naik said AYUSH Ministry had set up an Interdisciplinary AYUSH Research and Development Task Force with a group of senior experts to formulate and develop strategies for this initiative.

He said that the Ministry of AYUSH has undertaken many clinical, observational studies to understand the role of AYUSH intervention in mitigation and management of Covid-19.

This brings in uniformity and consistency in the Ayush-based responses to the pandemic across the country. It also helps State and UT governments to plan and incorporate these solutions into the Covid-19 management activities being deployed on the ground.

India on Tuesday reported 61,267 fresh infections of the novel coronavirus, taking the case tally to 66,85,082, health officials said. This is the lowest daily spike since August.

Though the cases are increasing, the recovery rate is 84.34 per cent in India which is less than Chile that has over 92 per cent cure rate, while the US that tops the Covid-19 cases in the world has around 33 per cent recovery rate.

The fatality rate has come down to 1.55 per cent, the data from the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare said.

Bhubaneswar: A new technology, Biofloc based farming is meant for intensive fish/ shrimp production that doesn’t need a large space. It can be done with basic natural resources like water and land.

With an aim to boost employment opportunities during this pandemic, Odisha government has launched a new scheme for promoting intensive aquaculture through Biofloc technology in fisheries. What’s more important is that the initiative would not only provide livelihood support to entrepreneurs, unemployed youth and interested progressive fish farmers, but will also increase fish production in the State.

This programme aims to support fish farmers and young entrepreneurs for generation of income and livelihood support, said Fisheries and Animal Resources Minister Arun Kumar Sahoo.

OTV Senior Editor Kasturi Ray today spoke to Dr Subhas Sarkar, Scientist (ICAR-CIFA) To understand more on the technology involved and the likely economic benefits as a result of its application. Here are the excerpts from the exclusive conversation.

What is Biofloc Technology In Fisheries and It’s advantages?

Biofloc is a technology using which one can produce fishes significantly in large quantities (in a small volume of water) as compared to the traditional form of aquaculture in large ponds. One advantage is everything is under the control as it is bio-secured system. However, there are some environmental parameters for aquaculture within a confined environment. It is easy to monitor the fish movement, their behaviour and abnormalities as they will remain within a tank which in turn will facilitate taking the corrective measures immediately.

One of the major advantages of this aquaculture technology is it’s water-saving, since a large amount of fish will be produced in comparatively lesser volume of water.

How does Biofloc based fish farming work?

“Moving over to the technological aspect, whenever we are growing fish, we are adding commercial feed to boost the production. In this process, the fishes release large amount of excreta, both in folic and ionic form. When we give fish protein feed for ensuring protein and other source during the metabolism process, fish releases ammonia which remains in the water.

If fish is grown in a restricted tank with less volume of water, too much feed is given to them, a huge amount of ammonia gets accumulated in the water. After digesting the feed, fishes release excreta which also gets accumulated in the water.

This actually creates problem for fish as it creates undesirable condition within the water and quality of the water also degrades. Such conditions hinder the fish growth. We have to create a desirable condition by removing the toxic chemicals and other elements from the water and maintain healthy condition of water,” the doctor said.

In Biofloc process of fishing, ammonia is converted into a non-toxic form through bacteria. Bacteria absorbs ammonia and converts it into a floating particle. Floating particle refers to a single cell bacteria.

The natural tendency of this bacteria is to coagulate and when trillions of bacteria float on the water surface, it coagulates and forms small flocks. When fish is grown along with bacteria, other microorganisms like protozoa and blue plankton are likely to be present within the water. All these together form a bacterial flock.

In this technological process, we are minimizing or neutralizing ammonia component and alongside, converting the toxic component into a protein particle. The bacteria will again consume the flock which is a recycling process of waste into a valuable protein component and at the same time it will maintain the water quality. The same food is recycled and the fishes can consume it several times- first directly and next from flock.

How to start Biofloc based fish farming : Experts Help A Must

Somebody wanting to go for this process needs expert advice because the person has to manage the water condition and quality, given the fact that fishing in a small volume of water might degrade the quality of water. Water quality management is the most important. Along with this, one needs to know about testing the water quality. Nowadays, many testing kits are available in the market which will help in analyzing the water quality and manage it as per requirement. It is essential to add carbon sources to the water as it will get vulnerable to ammonia. People generally use jaggery which is a readily available carbon source. To neutralize ammonia, one needs to add carbon source. However, the quantity of additional carbon source to be added to water source depends on the water quality (ammonia content). One must be aware of all these factors before initiating the process.

What is the investment required for Biofloc based farming?

There are two aspects, i.e. capital and operational expenditure. Capital expenditure will remain the same for all types of fish while the operational expenditure depends on the species.

Nowadays, there are readily available tarpaulin tanks which can store around 10,000 litres of water. Water volume will increase with the size of the tank. The cost of a 10,000 litre tank will cost around Rs 15-20K as per present market value. Prices could vary depending on the availability of the products in the local area.

The next thing is to arrange a system for oxygenation. For a four model tank, one needs a 1HP air blower which will cost around Rs 20,000.

Pipe arrangements and other required things in the subsequent phase which will cost around Rs 25K. Next, a shed is required over the tank and the cost depends on the arrangements. People can arrange locally available bamboo and other things to prepare a shed and it is estimated at around Rs 20K. The total capital expenditure can be estimated to be Rs 1-1.2 lakh.

The operational cost of fish production will be per kilo. The operational cost of certain fish species will be Rs 70-80 per kg. The price of production is high in this process as the operational cost is higher excluding the capital expenditure.

The price of a particular fish species also matters. Price of Pangas fish in Odisha is less in comparison to its price in Northern India, much alike to Rohu and Katla price. Marketing such fishes in Odisha is a major concern. Fishes like Rohu, Katla and Bhakur cannot grow in these tanks. In this process growing the fishes commercially may not be profitable as growing large fishes in small tanks is not feasible, they need space. This is a big drawback. You can grow some fishes with high market value. The high valued fishes are not in high demand in Odisha. So, growing such commercial fishes in a small tank and selling it in high-demanding markets like West Bengal would be profitable. A farmer needs to develop a good marketing value chain to sell the products.

Another big problem in Odisha is large scale availability of fish seed. Moreover, the survival rate of such large fishes in a tank is very low. The fishes might get injured at times. Before culturing these fishes in a tank, one needs to collect maximum information about the seed availability.

The Government Promises To Provide 40-60% Subsidy To SC/ST Beneficiaries. Will CIFA Be Partnering To Boost Such Innovative Technology To Empower Youth Groups Interested For This Process Of Fish Farming?

So far, CIFA is not a partnering institute in this case.

Will CIFA Be Roped In For The Project In Future, If Needed?

The entire process is based on experience of farmers and private entrepreneurs. They are trying at their own level. CIFA doesn’t have such technology to grow fish in tanks. No research work has been done till now on how much production can be done in a single tank and the time the entire process will consume. Whosoever does this, they have to do it on a trial basis first as we don’t have a clear picture on the production. After getting an overall idea, with confidence, one can initiate the process on a large-scale basis.

What does Odisha Govt Has To Say?

Biofloc system is suitable for growing freshwater fish species such as GIFT Tilapia, Magur, Pangasius, Anabas, Common Carp and others depending on local market demands.

In Biofloc technology, the waste organic matter in the tank, such as feed waste, is digested using probiotics (helpful bacteria) and carbon source such as molasses and gets converted to fish feed.

In normal pond based farming system, one acre of an earthen tank (4000 square metre area) produces about 2,000 kg of fish in 6 months; while in biofloc fish farming system, the same 2000 kg fish can be produced only from 4 small tanks of each 4-metre diameter and 1.2-metre depth installed in a floor area of about 100-150 square metre, the minister said.

Each biofloc tank is stocked with about 1,000-1,500 numbers of quality fish (2-3 cm) or fingerlings (8-10 cm) with a target of 500 kg fish production over a 6 month period.

Fish grows to about 200 grams within 3 months and 700 -800 grams within 6 months.

Therefore, depending on the local market demand, fish can be partially harvested on a daily basis to generate daily income for farmers. Biofloc farming system is also suitable for urban and semi-urban areas.

It can be set up even on terraces of buildings and backyard. It offers live or fresh fish to surrounding customers thus fetching higher market prices for the producer.

The unit cost for installation of a Biofloc unit of 2 tanks is Rs 1.50 lakh, while a biofloc unit of 6 tanks costs approximately Rs 4 lakh.

The state government provides a subsidy of 40 percent while 60 percent subsidy is provided to SC & ST beneficiaries for this scheme.

This new and emerging technology will provide an accelerated boost to the fish production of the state and encourage small landholders and entrepreneurs to take up fish farming in the state, the minister said, adding that the government will provide all technical know-how to implement the project.

Lives of innumerable people have gone topsy-turvy ever since the entire country went under lockdown in the wake of the Coronavirus outbreak in March. Many lost their breadwinning jobs, while others were forced to take up new means for survival.

Once aiming to make a name for Odias in Bollywood, Sauling Padhiali of P Nuagaon in Ganjam district had to take the toughest decision of his life- quit his dream and return back because of the pandemic. His story of crisis from being a choreographer in Mumbai to selling tea on his village street to eke out a living sums it all.

He was earning well enough to keep his five-member family contented and had earned quite a name in Bollywood, Ollywood, and even in Jollywood with his choreography.

29-year-old Sauling Padhiali was born in Gujarat. He lost his father at a tender age of 10 and was raised by his mother Budhi, who had to struggle to make ends meet.

Sauling was fascinated towards dance since childhood and as he grew up, he learned dancing from a Gujarat based teacher. Gradually, people noticed his talent which got him a break in Hindi and Odia films.

However, with everything shut after the announcement of nation-wide lockdown, Sauling was left jobless. He managed to take care of his family for some months with the savings he had but later decided to return to his ancestral village in Ganjam after he ran out of resources.

Since there was not much visibility, Sauling had to choose a footpath and started selling ‘rabidi’ tea in the roadside tea-stall near his village. Nowadays, he is earning a profit of around Rs 200-300 per day from his shop thanks to the craze for his ‘rabidi’ tea.

“I was earning well enough through dance. As studios and programs were closed due to the pandemic, I was forced to return to village and sell tea to earn something for survival,” said a disheartened Sauling.

In 2017, Sauling choreographed for ‘Hare Krishna Hare Rama’ track in ‘Commando 2’, which was his first break in Bollywood. He also worked for two Odia films-‘Bindas’ and ‘Jaga Hatare Pagha’. He had also assisted as a leading choreographer in the Odia movie- ‘Sundergarh Ra Salman Khan’. Sauling is also well known for his work in jatra industry and Odia albums.

“He is a talented choreographer and has garnered fame by working in Hindi and Odia films. He has also choreographed for Jatras and operas. However, he had to return to Odisha after the Covid-19 lockdown,” said a local of Beguniapda, Debendra Moharana.

“I often taste the earthen pot rabidi tea prepared by him and it’s fantastic. It is heart-breaking to see that being a choreographer, he is selling tea here,” said a customer.

Mumbai: Padma Vibhushan and music legend Pandit Jasraj passed away on Monday following a cardiac arrest at his home in New Jersey, US, at the age of 90. The news of his demise was announced by his daughter Durga Jasraj.

One of India’s greatest music legends, Pandit Jasraj leaves behind a storied legacy spanning almost eight decades.

Bapuji is no more, his daughter Durga, also a musician, told PTI over phone from Mumbai. She was inconsolable and could not speak any more.

Jasraj, who belonged to the Mewati Gharana, was in the US when the coronavirus-led lockdown happened and decided to stay back in that country.

With profound grief we inform that Sangeet Martand Pandit Jasraj ji breathed his last this morning at 5.15 EST due to a cardiac arrest at his home in New Jersey, USA, a statement issued by his family said here.

May Lord Krishna welcome him lovingly through the doors of heaven, where Pandit ji will now sing Om Namo Bhagwate Vasudevaya exclusively just for his beloved Lord. We pray that his soul rests in eternal musical peace. Thank you for your thoughts and prayers, Pandit Jasraj ji’s family, and the students of Mewati Gharana,” it said.

President Ram Nath Kovind expressed condolences on the demise of the music legend and Tweeted, “Music legend & unparalleled classical vocalist Pandit Jasraj’s passing makes me sad. Spanning a distinguished career of over 8 decades, Padma Vibhushan Pandit Jasraj, enthralled people with soulful renditions. Condolence to his family, friends & music connoisseurs.”

Prime Minister Narendra Modi also expressed grief on his demise and said, “The unfortunate demise of Pandit Jasraj leaves a deep void in the Indian cultural sphere. Not only were his renditions outstanding, he also made a mark as an exceptional mentor to several other vocalists. Condolences to his family & admirers worldwide.”

Indian classical vocalist Pandit Jasraj was honoured with Padma Vibhushan, Padma Bhushan and Padma Shri awards during his lifetime.

Last year, the International Astronomical Union had named a minor planet, located between Mars and Jupiter, after Pandit Jasraj, regarded as the doyen of Indian classical vocal music.

Minor planet 2006 VP32 (number-300128) was named as ‘Panditjasraj’.

The citation had read: “Sangeet Martand Pandit Jasraj is an exponent of Indian classical vocal music. A life dedicated to music, Jasraj is recipient of many awards, honours and titles. His distinctive voice traverses remarkable four and a half octave.”

Both Dhoni and Raina are expected to play in the upcoming edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL), for which both of them arrived in Chennai for a training camp ahead of the team’s departure for the UAE. The tournament starts from September 19 and will run till November 10.

Most of Raina’s international appearances came under Dhoni’s captaincy. He scored 5,615 runs in 226 ODI matches, which included five centuries and 1,605 runs, including one century in 78 T20Is. He was the first Indian player to score a century in T20I cricket and the first from the country to score a century in all three formats of the game.

Although he scored a hundred on Test debut, Raina managed to play only 18 games in the longest format and scored 768 runs. His century on debut was also his only ton in the longest format of the game.

Renowned for his ability in the field, Raina was part of the Indian teams that won the 2011 World Cup and the 2013 Champions Trophy, both under the captaincy of Dhoni.

Taking to his Instagram account, the captain fantastic wrote, ‘Thanks a lot for ur love and support throughout. from 1929 hrs consider me as Retired.’

The only captain who has won each and every cricket trophy for India, Dhoni’s records speaks for themselves.

Dhoni’s last match in Indian colours was when the Men in Blue lost against New Zealand in the semi-final of the 2019 World Cup at Old Trafford.

He spearheaded India to their second-ever ODI World Cup glory in 2011 and also scripted success at 2007 ICC World Twenty 20, the 2010 and 2016 Asia Cups, and the 2013 ICC Champions Trophy.

Dhoni, who had announced his retirement from Tests in 2014, has played 350 ODIs in which he had amassed 10773 runs at an average of 50.57 with 10 centuries and 73 fifties to his name.

Born on July 7, 1981, Dhoni made his debut in the international cricket in 2004 against Bangladesh and went on to become one of the fantastic cricketers in all forms of the Gentleman’s Game.

While the director has not yet made any official announcement related to the release of ‘Thriller’, he has released some breathtaking pictures from a photoshoot for the project.

In one of his tweets he thanked Apsara Rani for helping him realise about Odisha and discovering another talent from the State, Rock. He also said that he will introduce him opposite Apsara in Thriller.

Sharing another picture, RGV wrote, ” Want to see more THRILLER actors like @rock_kacchi and @apsara_rani_”

In another tweet, he informed about the home districts of the actors – Apsara Rani from Rourkela and Rock Kacchi from Nabarangpur.

New Delhi: The call for a self-reliant India is not aimed at encouraging “protectionism or isolationism”, but for adopting a pragmatic development strategy to enable the country to recognise and capitalise on its inherent strengths, Vice President M Venkaiah Naidu said on Sunday.

Speaking at the virtual launch of ‘Elyments’ mobile app, Venkiah Naidu said the “Atmanirbhar Bharat” campaign was aimed at giving a new boost to the economic potential of the country by strengthening infrastructure, using modern technologies, enriching human resource, and creating robust supply chains.

“It is not a call for protectionism or isolationism, but for adopting a pragmatic development strategy that would enable the country to recognise and capitalise on its inherent strengths,” Naidu observed.

India has come to be known as one of the IT superpowers of the world because of its talented scientists and technology experts who are occupying leadership positions across the globe, he said.

Naidu said it was quite appropriate that Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced the ‘Atmanirbhar Bharat App Innovation Challenge’ on Saturday as it would encourage Indian IT specialists to prepare apps for various uses to enhance the quality of life.

The vice president noted that more than a thousand IT professionals, who are also volunteers of the Art of Living, have together created the ‘Elyments’ app.

Art of Living founder Sri Sri Ravi Shankar was also part of the virtual launch.

On the YouTube link of the launch event, the developers said on Elyments, “People will be able to connect globally and shop locally”.

Data of users is stored in India and user’s data will never be shared with a third party without user’s consent, the write up said.

It allows free audio-video calls and a private chat connection.

The vice president said such initiatives by the Indian tech industry and professionals were truly praiseworthy as they not only demonstrated India’s prowess in technology but also were a step towards a self-reliant India.

In a strong posturing amid the ongoing standoff with China, Indian government today blocked as many as 59 popular Chinese apps including the video sharing app TikTok.

Other applications that have been blocked include Baidu Map, Helo, Likee, Mi Community, YouCam makeup, We Chat, Weibo, Xender, QQ Music, QQ Newsfeed, Virus Cleaner, APUS browsers, Newsdog, UC News, BigoLive, SelfieCity among others.

Informing about the decision, a release from the Government of India said, “The Ministry of Information Technology, invoking it’s power under section 69A of the Information Technology Act read with the relevant provisions of the Information Technology (Procedure and Safeguards for Blocking of Access of Information by Public) Rules 2009 and in view of the emergent nature of threats has decided to block 59 apps ( see Appendix) since in view of information available they are engaged in activities which is prejudicial to sovereignty and integrity of India, defence of India, security of state and public order.”

Citing raging concerns on aspects relating to data security and safeguarding the privacy of 130 crore Indians, the ministry highlighted that such concerns also pose a threat to sovereignty and security of our country.

“The Ministry of Information Technology has received many complaints from various sources including several reports about misuse of some mobile apps available on Android and iOS platforms for stealing and surreptitiously transmitting users’ data in an unauthorized manner to servers which have locations outside India. The compilation of these data, its mining and profiling by elements hostile to national security and defence of India, which ultimately impinges upon the sovereignty and integrity of India, is a matter of very deep and immediate concern which requires emergency measures,” the release read.

If he feels that this actor can play this character well, irrespective of what age they are, then he will certainly cast them. I think it’s the directors prerogative whom to cast and whom not to. They both, Tapsee and Bhumi, are brilliant actresses.”

HUL announced on Thursday the rebranding of its flagship brand Fair & Lovely. Taking forward the brand’s journey towards a more inclusive vision of beauty, the company will stop using the word ‘Fair’ in the brand name ‘Fair & Lovely’. The new name is awaiting regulatory approvals and HUL expects to change the name in the next few months. The brand is committed to celebrating all skin tones.

The Fair and Lovely brand has been criticized by some sections for promoting fairness as a symbol of beauty in an Indian milieu where diversity of skin tones is prevalent.

In a statement, it said over the last decade, Fair & Lovely’s advertising has evolved to communicate a message of women’s empowerment. The brand’s vision is to adopt a holistic approach to beauty that cares for people, that must be inclusive and diverse – for everyone, everywhere.

In early 2019, the brand’s communication moved away from the benefits of fairness, whitening and skin lightening, towards glow, even tone, skin clarity and radiance, which are holistic measures of healthy skin.

HUL also removed from Fair & Lovely’s packaging, words such as ‘fair/fairness’, ‘white/whitening’, and ‘light/lightening’ that could indicate a fairness-led transformation. The cameo with two faces showing shade transformation, as well as the shade guides were removed from the packs. The Company will continue to evolve its advertising, to feature women of different skin tones, representative of the variety of beauty across India.

Village, villagers and migrants – the tone of Prime Minister Narendra Modi at the launch of Rs 50,000 cr Garib Kalyan Rojgar Abhiyan – a rural mega job scheme targeted at returnee migrant workers was loud and clear.

Hailing the role played by villages in successfully containing the spread of coronavirus, Prime Minister Narendra Modi acknowledged, “India is a country with more than 6 lakh villages, where more than two-thirds of its population, which is about 80-85 crore people, lives. The rural India has effectively prevented the spread of infection. This population is even more than that of all the countries of Europe.”

The scheme which is aimed at the returnee migrant workers is a massive rural public employment scheme which seeks to provide livelihood opportunities to them along with other rural citizens.

Modi, addressing the migrant labourers, remarked, “The country understands your emotions as well as your needs. Garib Kalyan Rojgar Abhiyan starting from Khagaria, Bihar is a major tool to fulfil that very need.”

Joining the video conference, Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar said, “During the lockdown, I interacted through video conference with labourers in different districts after they returned to the state. I realised that they don’t want to go elsewhere for work”.

The migrant crisis emerged as a political headache for the BJP-JDU combine in the state which will go to polls later this year. This scheme is expected to address much of its socio-economic concerns.

At least 25,000 migrant workers who returned home in the wake of the pandemic will be benefited in states like Bihar, Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, Jharkhand and Odisha. UP and Bihar took the bulk of the load of the reverse migration.

The scheme that seeks to give means to the migrant workers to earn a living will involve intensified implementation of 25 different types of works which in turn will create rural infrastructure.

PM Modi also mentioned about the investment of Rs 1 lakh cr for building cold storage facilities to preserve agricultural produce. He also urged them to wear masks and maintain basic hygiene while going to work.

The Prime Minister began his address by remembering the sacrifice of our martyrs. “Everyone is proud of Bihar Regiment’s valour. Each and every Bihari is very proud of it,” he said.

The bulk of the fatalities and injury in the India-China violent clash was from Bihar regiment, which also lost its Commanding Officer Colonel B. Santosh Babu.

In a historic decision, the Supreme Court of India has cancelled the centuries-old annual Rath Yatra this year in the wake of Covid-19 pandemic.

An SC bench headed by Chief Justice of India, SA Bobde while hearing a plea seeking cancellation of the festival this year ruled, “We consider it appropriate that in the interest of public health and safety of citizens to restrain the respondents from holding the Rath Yatra this year. We direct that no Rath Yatra 2020 will be held in temple areas of Odisha.”

Hearing a plea filed by Odisha Vikash Parishad, CJI noted, “Lord Jagannath will not forgive us if we allow this to continue. Activities related to the Rath Yatra is injuncted.”

CJI further orders that no secular or religious activity associated with the Rath Yatra will take place this year. The matter has been listed for hearing after 4 weeks.

Solicitor General Mukul Rohatgi appearing for the petitioner during the hearing submitted that a congregation of lakhs of people cannot be allowed for the yatra amid the Covid-19 pandemic. “It will be impossible to contain such a large gathering. Even the Olympics have been postponed this year,” said the SG.

As per the legal news website, Live Law, intervenors repeatedly asked the CJI for the rituals to be allowed to continue as they are religious in nature.

While SG Tushar Mehta appearing for the Union Government says as the sensitivity of the matter requires that some rituals should be allowed. However, the CJI refused to entertain the submission saying “The word ‘juggernaut’ comes from Jagannath; a juggernaut cannot be stopped. So, Lord Jagannath cannot be stopped by this.”

Advocate Hitendra Ratha says senior lawyer Harish Salve appearing for Odisha submitted that conduct of festival might create huge public gathering & law and order situation but he never mentioned about any alternative way to pull chariots by elephants or machines.

Amid the enforcement of Covid lockdown, as uncertainty prevailed over the festival right from the beginning of the festivities during Chandan Yatra sparking speculations, the State government the Home Ministry allowed the construction of chariots for the festival on May 7.

The Home Ministry has also clarified that the decision regarding holding of Rath Yatra is to be taken by the State Government keeping in view the conditions prevailing during the festival.

Thereafter, the chariot works commenced almost a week after the usual date of the construction process which begins from the day of Chandan Yatra festival.

Odisha High Court too asked the State government to complete the chariot construction on a war footing by June 23 and the order forced the administration to deploy carpenters to finish the job. Sources said the chariot construction had reached the last phases and was scheduled to be completed in a day or two.

Snana Purnima ritual, the prelude to the Car Festival was also completed in a disciplined but subdued manner in the wake of Covid outbreak. The administration clamped section 144 in Puri town to ensure the festival was held without the participation of devotees.

Puri Gajapati on May 30 also informed that the Rath Yatra will be held without devotees.

Mumbai: Bollywood actor Sushant Singh Rajput reportedly committed suicide in Mumbai on Sunday.

The actor was found hanging at his Bandra residence in Mumbai, said police reports.

Meanwhile, police have reached his apartment and started the investigation. However, the exact reason behind his death is yet to be revealed. It is being rumoured that Sushant wasn’t feeling well since the last few days.

Earlier on June 9, Sushant Singh Rajput’s former manager Disha Salian allegedly committed suicide by jumping off the 14th floor of a building in Malad, Mumbai. Though the reason behind the suicide is yet to be ascertained, close friends of Disha while interrogation had revealed that she was suffering from depression.

34-year-old actor Sushant on June 3 had written an emotional note for his late mother on his Instgram post. Remembering his mother, Sushant shared a picture collage and wrote, “Blurred past evaporating from teardrops. Unending dreams carving an arc of smile and a fleeting life, negotiating between the two. #माँ ❤️”

Sushant Singh Rajput debuted as actor with Ekta Kapoor’s daily soap Kis Desh Mein Hai Mera Dil and rose to fame as ‘Manav’ of Zee TV’s Pavitra Rishta. He got his break in Bollywood with ‘Kai Po Che!’ in 2013. ‘M.S. Dhoni: The Untold Story’, ‘PK’, ‘Shuddh Desi Romance’, ‘Kedarnath’, ‘Chhichhore’ are his other movies. He was last seen in Netflix movie ‘Drive.’

Bhubaneswar: Odisha government on Thursday announced to relax the night curfew imposed in the wake of Covid-19 outbreak from 7 pm to 10 pm on June 12, giving a bit of cheer to people of the State ahead of the annual Raja festival beginning June 14.

Special Relief Commissioner of the State, Pradip Jena in a revised letter has ordered that in view of Raja Festival, the night curfew on June 12th will be effected from 10 pm to enable people to do their pre-Raja shopping during the evening hours.

The SRC has however mentioned that all other restrictions enforced in lieu of Covid-19 will continue to remain unchanged.

State government has already given extensive relaxations to various economic activities despite extending lockdown till June 30. As per the central guidelines, the government has made the night curfew regulations tighter by clamping prohibitory orders from 7 pm to 7 am daily.

Raja Celebration, one of the major festivals in Odisha is celebrated with much pomp and show in every household. This year, due to the prevailing Covid-19 pandemic, the State government has enforced various restrictions to prevent people from congregating during the three-day gala.

While the weekend shutdown orders will continue to remain in force in 11 districts of the State during the first two-days of the festival on June 13 and 14, authorities of several districts have also imposed section 144 in various tourism and places of interest to minimise public movement.

Eminent neurosurgeon Dr. Sanatan Rath passed away today at the age of 86 in his Cuttack residence. He was suffering from cancer and other old-age related complications for quite some time, his family sources said.

Sanatan Rath was born on July 25, 1934. After completing his Master of Surgery in Neurosurgery from Christian Medical College, Vellore in 1965, he joined as an Assistant professor of Neurosurgery in SCB Medical College and Hospital and was later appointed head of the department.

Sanatan Rath was one of the most sought-after neurosurgeons in the country during his professional career and successfully conducted numerous critical surgeries across the State and outside which earned him a lot of fame. He was chosen as the Director of Medical Education in Odisha in 1991.

“It is a huge loss to medical science in Odisha. He was first neurosurgeon of the State and played a crucial role in the development of its treatment. When he completed MS Neurosurgery from CMC Vellore, he was offered a job there. However, he did not accept the offer and returned to Odisha to serve the people,” Senior neurosurgeon Ashok Mohapatra said while expressing condolence on the demise of the veteran doctor.

“In 1981, he procured a CT scan machine for SCB. At that time, there were only two other CT scan across India. Later, he also started neurosurgery training,” Mohapatra said.

Sanatan Rath was elected as the President of the Neurological Society of India in 1994 and President of Association of Neuroscientists of Eastern India (ANEI) in 1995. He was the winner of the Lifetime Achievement Award in 2009.

Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik, Union Minister Dharmendra Pradhan, BJP vice-president Baijayant Panda and other noted personalities expressed grief over the passing away of Rath.

 Mumbai: Bollywood composer-singer Wajid Khan of the popular sibling composer duo- Sajid-Wajid is no more. He passed away in the early hours on Monday.

Confirming the news, singer Sonu Nigam posted on his official social media handle: “My brother Wajid left us.”

The cause of death has not yet been confirmed, though unconfirmed reports have stated the artiste was suffering from COVID-19. A report in filmibeat.com, on the other hand, stated Wajid Khan had been suffering from a kidney problem over the past few years and had reportedly been on ventilator after being hospitalised recently.

Sajid-Wajid recently composed songs for Bollywood superstar Salman Khan during the ongoing lockdown, one of which was a number titled “Pyaar karona”, a pop anthem encouraging all to fight the coronavirus. The song released in April was sung by Salman and also featured the actor in the video.

The composer duo also recently composed Salman’s Eid special song, “Bhai bhai”, which talks of communal harmony.

Sajid-Wajid frequently collaborated as composers for Salman Khan. In fact, they made their debut in the 1998 Salman superhit, “Pyaar Kiya To Darna Kya”, scoring one song in that film, “Teri jawani badi mast mast hai”.

Sajid-Wajid shot to fame with the Salman Khan blockbuster “Dabangg” in 2010, and there has been no looking back. Among numerous hits they composed were “Tere mast mast do nain” and “Hud hud Dabangg” (“Dabangg”), “Do you wanna partner” and “Soni de nakhre” (“Partner”), “Mujhse shaadi karogi” and “Laal dupatta” (“Mujhse Shaadi Karogi”), “Mashallah” (Ek Tha Tiger”), “Chinta ta chita” (“Rowdy Rathore”), “Fevicol se” (“Dabangg 2”) and “Raat bhar” (“Heropanti”).

Wajid Khan also was a mentor of the music reality show “Sa Re Ga Ma Pa Singing Superstar” and “Sa Re Ga Ma Pa 2012”.

As the news of Wajid Khan’s demise spread, Bollywood took to social media to express grief and shock.

“Terrible news. The one thing I will always remember is Wajid bhai’s laugh. Always smiling. Gone too soon. My condolences to his family and everyone grieving. Rest in peace my friend. You are in my thoughts and prayers,” tweeted Priyanka Chopra.

Among the first to confirm the news with a tweet of condolence was composer Salim Merchant of the Salim-Suleiman duo. “Devastated with the news of the passing away of my brother Wajid of Sajid -Wajid fame. May Allah give strength to the family.. Safe travels bro.. @wajidkhan7 you’ve gone too soon. It’s a huge loss to our fraternity. I’m shocked & broken,” wrote Salim.

Vishal Dadlani wrote on Twitter: “Wajid Khan is gone far too soon. His talent and heart were never appreciated enough. All the times we planned to meet & never did because we were busy, those will always rankle. Sajid Khan, mere bhai. You will never be alone & our brother will forever be remembered.”

Shweta Bachchan has now become a regular fixture of the Bollywood world. The daughter of Amitabh Bachchan was married very early to Nikhil Nanda and lived most of the time in Delhi with her in-laws. Sources said, a bench comprising Orissa High Court Chief Justice Mohammad Rafiq and Justice SK Mishra while hearing a PIL filed by a senior advocate of the HC, Jayanta Kumar Bal today asked Odisha government to complete the work as per stipulated time.

Court has ordered that the chariot construction work should be completed by June 22 so that the festival can be held without any deviation in tradition, sources with knowledge of the matter said.

The petitioner had made the Centre, Odisha government’s archaeological department, State Chief Secretary, Secretary Home Department, DGP, Puri Collector, SJTA and Puri Gajapati parties in the case.

Responding to the court’s orders, State Advocate General appearing on behalf of the Odisha government has assured the court that since the construction of the chariots is in full swing, the work will be completed in due time.

It may be noted that due to nationwide lockdown imposed in the wake of Covid pandemic, the construction work of all the three chariots of the Holy Trinity started almost 10 days after the scheduled date following lot of speculation. The big decision was taken after the Ministry of Home Affairs allowed Odisha government to commence the construction activity by duly complying with COVID-19 lockdown guidelines.

Sources said, the construction of fitting of hubs and spokes of the chariot wheels is underway at Ratha Khala in Puri. The government has already asked the Shree Jagannath Temple Administration to allow extra-hours for construction work to compensate the loss of time. The authorities have also put up a special arrangement for COVID-19 test of servitors engaged in chariot construction.

Super cyclone Amphan hit the landmass as an extremely severe cyclonic storm on West Bengal-Bangladesh coast between Digha (West Bengal) and Hatiya Islands (Bangladesh) across Sunderbans between 3.30 pm and 5.30 pm. It recorded a maximum sustained wind speed of 155-165 kmph gusting to 185 kmph during landfall, informed IMD DG, Mrutyunjay Mohapatra.

The track is similar to cyclone Bulbul, but Amphan is a more intense cyclone than Bulbul. The cyclone is entering West Bengal coast near Sundarbans, he said.

All 20 NDRF teams including reserve teams are on ground in Odisha for evacuation and restoration work. Cyclone Amphan landfall has started and the situation is fast changing and NDRF is keeping a close watch, said NDRF chief SN Pradhan.

Meteorological Centre in Bhubaneswar has informed that the landfall process commenced since 2.30 PM. It will continue for about 4 hours. The forward sector of the wall cloud region is entering into land in West Bengal.

As per latest updates from IMD, Cyclone Amphan is about 150 km east-northeast of Paradip, 95 km south-southeast of Digha (West Bengal), 90 km south of Sagar island and 260 km West-southwest of Khepupara. The cyclone will cross West Bengal-Bangladesh coasts between Digha (WB) and Hatiya Islands (Bangladesh) close to Sundarbans. The landfall process will commence from late afternoon (4pm onwards).

As per model prediction, Cyclone Amphan is heading north resulting in deceleration of wind in Paradip, while wind speed is picking up in Balasore and Bhadrak, informed IMD DG, Mrutyunjay Mohapatra.

Cyclone Amphan is currently located about 120 km east of Paradip, IMD stated in its latest bulletin. It is likely to cross West Bengal-Bangladesh coasts between Digha (WB) and Hatiya Islands (Bangladesh) close to Sunderbans. The landfall process will commence from afternoon, the bulletin said.

10:30 AM: Wind speed of 94 kmph was recorded in Paradip, 80 in Chandbali, 73 in Balasore and 35 in Bhubaneswar.

IMD’s latest bulletin indicates that Cyclone Amphan is about 125 km East-South East of Paradip, 225 km South of Digha & 380 km SW of Khepupara. The intensity near center is around 170-180 kmph gusting to 200kmph. Current wind speed witnessed in Paradip is 102 kmph, Chandbali-74, Balasore-61, Puri-41, Bhubaneswar- 37 kmph.

Bhubaneswar: The big cyclone breaking this morning is super cyclone Amphan has lost its ‘eye’. The eastern side eyewall of cyclone Amphan is now open. The rapid consolidation of the cyclone Amphan is now facing the oceanic bumps.

But all is not doom for the super cyclone Amphan. The western eyewall is still solidly entrenched, and which is now tilted towards the coastal Odisha, reveals both the infrared and visual satellite images of cyclone Amphan. (see the image below)

Even, the Joint Typhoon Warning Centre (JTWC) has very clearly mentioned in its latest analysis that the ‘eye’ of cyclone Amphan is lost now. The ace forecaster attributed the rupture or opening of the eastern eye wall to easterly shear and mid-level dry air. These two factors are proving roadblocks on the path of Amphan’s intensification, it outlined.   

These satellite images dropped the big clue as why cyclone Amphan will revert to being extremely severe cyclone today, and, also, why the central pressure of the system will topple the 955 hPa during the next 6 hours. The current central pressure of the system is measured at 940 hPa from 919 hPa 24 hours ago, when IMD had declared cyclone Amphan as a Super Cyclone.

Will Cyclone Amphan Lose Steam?

It seems unlikely. Though tight band of eyewalls indicate greater intensification and the vice versa, the observation of Met scientists is this happens in the category of super cyclonic storms. They say such super storm undergo eye replacement cycle, where the old eye gives way to formation of a new eye.

And during such replacement period, the storm loses its intensity and weakens little.

But they warn that it doesn’t mean that the impact will be lessened in any significant way. Rather, their observation is this process undoubtedly will downgrade the category but the spread of cyclone’s force winds will then spread to larger areas. In simple words, the destructive edge of the cyclone remains more or less, intact.

Bhubaneswar: As Amphan hurtles towards the coast, India Meteorological Department (IMD) DG Mrutyunjay Mohapatra on Monday informed that the extremely severe cyclonic storm is very likely to intensify into a super cyclone.

Speaking to OTV, Mohapatra said “Cyclone Amphan is gathering more strength and intensified into an extremely severe cyclonic storm at around 2.30 am today. The formation will intensify further in the next 12 hours and is likely to turn into a super cyclone.”

“At the time of landfall in the day time or evening on May 20, when the cyclone will cross West Bengal and Bangladesh coasts between Digha (West Bengal) and Hatiya Islands (Bangladesh), the maximum wind speed will reach 155-165 kmph gusting to 185 kmph,” added the DG.

As predicted by the IMD earlier, there is no change in the alert issued for Odisha and West Bengal. The cyclone will gain strength in the next 12 hours in sea and thereafter when it will move towards north of Bay of Bengal, it will gradually weaken in a phased manner,” said DG Mrutyunjay Mohapatra.

Under the influence of cyclone Amphan, the northern coastal districts of Odisha including Jagatsinghpur, Kendrapara, Bhadrak and Balasore will witness strong winds and heavy rainfall on May 19 and 20. During landfall process, the highest wind speed is likely to remain between 120-135 kmph in these districts, stated Mohapatra.

On the other hand, weather expert Umashankar Das says that the latest predictions hint at maximum wind speed accelerating to 200-230 kmph, gusting up to 255 kmph when Amphan turns into a Super Cyclone.

The IMD in its morning bulletin said the extremely severe cyclonic storm ‘AMPHAN’ over central parts of South Bay of Bengal and adjoining central Bay of Bengal moved nearly northwards with a speed of 13 kmph during past six hours and lay centred over west-central and adjoining central parts of South Bay of Bengal, about 790 km nearly south of Paradip (Odisha), 940 km south-southwest of Digha (West Bengal) and 1060 km south-southwest of Khepupara (Bangladesh).
“It is very likely to intensify further into a Super Cyclonic Storm during next 12 hours,” added the IMD bulletin.

Coastal Odisha is likely to experience light to moderate rainfall at many places from May 18 evening with heavy falls at isolated places over coastal Odisha including Gajapati, Ganjam, Puri, Jagatsinghpur and Kendrapara district, predicted the Met agency.

Rainfall at most places and heavy to very heavy rainfall at a few places over north coastal Odisha (Jagatsinghpur, Kendrapara, Jajpur, Bhadrak, Balasore & Mayurbhanj districts) will be seen on May 19.

Similarly, isolated heavy rainfall over north Odisha (Bhadrak, Balasore, Mayurbhanj, Jajpur, Kendrapara and Keonjhar districts) will occur on May 20.

San Francisco: US-based Sorrento Therapeutics has announced that an antibody has demonstrated its ability to completely block SARS-CoV-2 infection of healthy cells in preclinical laboratory experiments.

SARS-CoV-2 is the virus responsible for the COVID-19 pandemic.

The results on Friday showed that Sorrento’s anti-SARS-CoV-2 antibody, STI-1499, completely neutralised the virus infectivity at a very low antibody dose, making it a prime candidate for further testing and development.

Initial biochemical and biophysical analyses also indicate STI-1499 is a potentially strong antibody drug candidate, said the antibody-centric biopharmaceutical company headquartered in San Diego, California.

“Our STI-1499 antibody shows exceptional therapeutic potential and could potentially save lives following receipt of necessary regulatory approvals,” Henry Ji, Chairman and CEO of Sorrento, said in a statement.

“We at Sorrento are working day and night to complete the steps necessary to get this product candidate approved and available to the waiting public.”

Sorrento aims to generate an antibody cocktail product that would act as a “protective shield” against SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus infection and remain effective even if virus mutations render a single antibody therapy less effective over time.

The company has been screening billions of antibodies and has so far identified hundreds of antibody candidates that bind the S1 subunit of the SARS-CoV-2 Spike protein.

Approximately one dozen of these antibodies have demonstrated the ability to block the S1 protein’s interaction with human angiotensin-converting enzyme 2 (ACE2), the receptor used for viral entrance into human cells, Sorrento said.

These blocking antibodies were further tested in an in vitro SARS-CoV-2 virus infection model pursuant to a preclinical testing agreement for COVID-19 therapeutic candidates that was previously announced on March 31.

Among the antibodies showing neutralizing activity, the antibody, STI-1499, stood out for its ability to completely block SARS-CoV-2 infection of healthy cells in the experiments.

Sorrento said STI-1499 will likely be the first antibody in the antibody cocktail (COVI-SHIELD) it is developing.

STI-1499 is also expected to be developed as a stand-alone therapy, (COVI-GUARD) because of the high potency it has exhibited in experiments to date.
