Pandit Jasraj, The Doyen Of Indian Classical Music Passes Away At 90

Mumbai: Padma Vibhushan and music legend Pandit Jasraj passed away on Monday following a cardiac arrest at his home in New Jersey, US, at the age of 90. The news of his demise was announced by his daughter Durga Jasraj.

One of India’s greatest music legends, Pandit Jasraj leaves behind a storied legacy spanning almost eight decades.

Bapuji is no more, his daughter Durga, also a musician, told PTI over phone from Mumbai. She was inconsolable and could not speak any more.

Jasraj, who belonged to the Mewati Gharana, was in the US when the coronavirus-led lockdown happened and decided to stay back in that country.

With profound grief we inform that Sangeet Martand Pandit Jasraj ji breathed his last this morning at 5.15 EST due to a cardiac arrest at his home in New Jersey, USA, a statement issued by his family said here.

May Lord Krishna welcome him lovingly through the doors of heaven, where Pandit ji will now sing Om Namo Bhagwate Vasudevaya exclusively just for his beloved Lord. We pray that his soul rests in eternal musical peace. Thank you for your thoughts and prayers, Pandit Jasraj ji’s family, and the students of Mewati Gharana,” it said.

President Ram Nath Kovind expressed condolences on the demise of the music legend and Tweeted, “Music legend & unparalleled classical vocalist Pandit Jasraj’s passing makes me sad. Spanning a distinguished career of over 8 decades, Padma Vibhushan Pandit Jasraj, enthralled people with soulful renditions. Condolence to his family, friends & music connoisseurs.”

Prime Minister Narendra Modi also expressed grief on his demise and said, “The unfortunate demise of Pandit Jasraj leaves a deep void in the Indian cultural sphere. Not only were his renditions outstanding, he also made a mark as an exceptional mentor to several other vocalists. Condolences to his family & admirers worldwide.”

Indian classical vocalist Pandit Jasraj was honoured with Padma Vibhushan, Padma Bhushan and Padma Shri awards during his lifetime.

Last year, the International Astronomical Union had named a minor planet, located between Mars and Jupiter, after Pandit Jasraj, regarded as the doyen of Indian classical vocal music.

Minor planet 2006 VP32 (number-300128) was named as ‘Panditjasraj’.

The citation had read: “Sangeet Martand Pandit Jasraj is an exponent of Indian classical vocal music. A life dedicated to music, Jasraj is recipient of many awards, honours and titles. His distinctive voice traverses remarkable four and a half octave.”
