The main purpose of the Sorting Hat is to sort students into one of the four Hogwarts houses. It originally belonged to the founder of the Gryffindor House, Godric Gryffindor. However, it was bewitched by all the four founders of Hogwarts (Godric Gryffindor, Salazar Slytherin, Helga Hufflepuff, and Rowena Ravenclaw) for the sorting purpose. Remember the time when Harry was being sorted? The Hat saw that Harry was courageous and talented, with a good mind and the thirst to prove himself. The Hat has hardly made any errors while sorting the students and refuses to admit it has made any at all. It is kept in the Headmaster’s/ Headmistresses’ office when not in use.

The Sorting Hat can be used for another purpose in addition to sorting the wizards and witches. The hat can be used to magically pull out the sword of Godric Gryffindor, the original owner of the Hat. The sword and the Hat are his only known relics. However, the sword cannot be pulled by anyone. It can only be done by a Gryffindor who is considered worthy enough for it. In short, regardless of how secure the sword’s location is, you can magically pull out the sword from the Sorting Hat if you are a worthy Gryffindor. Both Harry and Neville were able to pull out the sword from the Hat; in the Chamber of Secrets and during the refusal to join Voldemort’s army respectively.
A hat with a personality of its own!
Although it’s just a hat, the Sorting Hat comes up with a new song at the beginning of every term. The song describes all the four Hogwarts Houses. The Sorting Hat represents the unity of Hogwarts and urges all the students to maintain unity regardless of the division of the Houses. If you have watched the series closely or read the books carefully, you will realize that the Sorting Hat has an expansive memory. When the Hat was put on Ron Weasley, it instantly remembered that this is another Weasley and declared Gryffindor. The same was said to Malfoy being in Slytherin.
