The Different Categories of Jewellery

Jewelry comes in an infinite number of styles and a ton of materials are used in making various types of jewelry. To keep track of what type of jewelry an artifact fits into there are categories that distinguish jewelry by the type of materials it is compiled from and the historic value of that artifact. Here is an overview of some of the categories.

Vintage Jewelry

An artifact needs to be 20 years old to be considered as vintage, some collectors consider that age gap to be 30 years old and up to be vintage. Vintage jewelry is also typically very characteristic of its era. Think about the bold geometric characteristics of the early ’80s. Vintage has been defined loosely by dealers today because many items can be considered collectible. The prices of these artifacts can vary a lot depending on the previous owner or the back story behind the artifact.

Antique Jewelry

Antique jewelry is 100 years or older. Pieces from the Art Nouveau, Georgian and even Deco qualify. Old European cut diamonds, rose-cut stones, and plenty of platinum are the defining characteristics of this age of the jewelry. These artifacts are hand-cut, and the craftsmanship is heavily reflected in them. You will find minor errors in the cutting of the diamonds or maybe the rough edges as there was no method to eliminate these flaws back in those times.

Fine Jewelry

Jewelry made of precious metals like gold, platinum, and silver, along with precious or semi-precious gemstones. Diamonds and other gemstones such as emeralds and rubies are the salient features of this category of jewelry. Fine jewelry is the most bought jewelry in this day and age, as time progresses jewelry-making techniques and styles have also varied and fine jewelry is a perfect reflection of that change. It doesn’t have the old design features of the ’80s or the roughness of the Georgian times. Prices of these pieces are high but not astronomical diamond locket set price in Pakistan would be a good example to base this category on.

Costume/Dress/Travel jewelry

Jewelry that’s shaped to look like fine jewelry, or is a duplicate of a fine jewelry piece, comprised of less expensive metals & materials. Costume jewelry might use crystal, cubic zirconia, and quartz along with plastic gemstones on the low-end and gold plated metals on the high end. These don’t have a lot of value to them these don’t have the craftmanship or any history behind them. This is the most affordable category of jewelry and also the least desirable. It lacks the luster of gold and the fine cut precision of a real gemstone

High Jewelry/Haute Joallerie

Haute Joallerie takes fine jewelry to the next stage. High Jewelry can be summed up as wearable art. It transforms already precious gems into unfathomably valuable and gorgeous pieces. Think showstoppers designed by Tiffany & Co, JAR and Chopard’s Red Carpet Collection. but the most iconic names in the high jewelry world are Bvlgari and Van Cleef & Arpels. Haute Joallerie is what you’ll see on Oscar’s red carpet when the actresses walk past on the red carpet. The craftsmanship is exquisite the best of the best material is used for these jewels and not a stone is left unturned in the creation of high jewelry

In the end

In the end, the jewelry market is prospering day after day as our obsession for jewelry never seems to take a rest and as long as our minds keep on getting excited and enticed by these precious metals and gemstones the jewelry market will keep on growing. And as it expands towards the E-commerce market online gold shopping in Pakistan and India is also on the rise as jewelry is a huge part of their culture and tradition. The love of jewelry is an inherited feeling as jewelry has been in practice since the beginning of mankind. Our ancestors loved the glistening gold and the sparkle of diamonds and so do we. These materials have peaked our interests in the past and they still do. Jewelry has become a significant part of our existence and there is no sign of it slowing down in the near future.
